Those who go down to the sea in ships...they see the works of the Lord... For He commands and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up the waves of the sea. They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; Their soul melts because of trouble...at their wits’ end... they cry out to the Lord in their trouble ... He calms the storm... its waves are still...they are glad...He guides them to their desired haven. Psalms 107:23-30
You should read the whole account, this is abbreviated. This is a prophecy of when Jesus fed the multitude; they tried to make Him King; He refuses; they are upset; He sends them away while He prays; they are murmuring; He sends a storm; they are terrified; He calms the storm; they are glad. Their attitude is changed (John 6:15-21)
Have you ever been in a storm? Maybe there are great temptations, or imminent trouble - a loss of job, serious illness, trouble with the law, family breakup, some fruit from your folly or unprovoked event. Whatever it is and no matter the cause, the LORD allows it to happen.
Allows? Yes! There is nothing the LORD cannot prevent. Oftentimes the LORD does not intervene to stop trouble. Instead, He uses the event to reveal to us what is in our hearts, the character flaws we still carry, and our need to turn to Him for deliverance. The disciples' pride and murmuring needed to be dashed and their faith in Him restored so He called for the storm. Then foolish ambitions were quickly forgotten.
In some cases, the storms come because we need to see that the LORD can really deliver. This is preparation for the bigger storm to come. The seas will roar when our trust in someone is shattered; when they disappoint us, and we are disillusioned. But Jesus says, don't trust men, trust Me. A great plan of yours has collapsed, even though you wanted to serve the LORD. Why, LORD, why? Just turn to the Master of the seas. Maybe you still need to spend time at His feet, before launching into the deep.
The storm also shows that there is no peace for the wicked, for they are like the troubled sea when it cannot rest (Isa 57:20-21). Sin has destroyed our peace and there is no possibility of rest until we turn to the LORD. Until the followers of Jesus give up their unholy traits or until the evil person surrenders to God, they have no peace.
Jesus can walk on your storm; He can rebuke the waves; He can tell the seas to be at peace and be still and they have to obey. What situation are you facing today? Turn to the Master of the seas, and He can bring peace to your soul.
